LEHIGH ACRES: A Lehigh neighborhood battered by burglars is ready to take matters into their own hands. Deputies explained what all of us can learn from their action plan.

Joe Seda-Morales is a long-time Lehigh Acres resident and he doesn't like the direction his neighborhood has taken.

"There have been two robberies down Herb Street. The next street down, there have been three robberies. The next street down - another two robberies," he said. "When I first moved here, everything was really quite nice."

If you are interested in a neighborhood watch in your area, send LCSO Rep a private message right here on LAL, or post right here in the Sheriff's forum.

Larry will get back to you in short order.

It is unfortunate that these things are happening in Lehigh but there is a bright spot. Neighbors are getting together, that is the start of a neighborhood that watches our for each other resulting in a closer sense of community and security.

The Community Policing sub committee with the Weed and Seed program has made forming neighborhood watch groups a priority. Their goal is to double the number of watch groups in the first year and triple them in two years. In 7 months we have nearly met our goal of establishing 9 new neighborhood watches this year.

The Community Policing group is committed to helping anyone start a neighborhood watch group, that includes coaching, support and bringing in volunteers to answer questions and draw attention with clean up programs.

This is a great story.

Did any of you participate in their first meeting?  How did it go?
