The  Sheriff along with the other emergency responders are asking all citizens to ICE their cell phones. To do that you place in your directory an ICE entry. ICE stands for "In Case of Emergency." Under that entry put the phone numbers of people who wil have your Medical, Alerigic & Doctors information or (MAD information). There are some who go on to include such directory entries as: ICE - Dad, ICE - Mom, ICE - wife, ICE - husband, etc.

Do this so that in case of an emergency the responders will not have to invest several minutes running down this information from other sources. They will have the information that they need to begin to give you the immediate medical attention that you need.

Please take the time to do this right now.

Thanks for thr information!  I will do it as soon as I get done replying to your post . :-)

How long has this been around?  I think it is a great idea, especially since the first responders know to look on our phone for info that will help them and you.

I am not sure how long it has been around. I have heard of it before now, but on June 11, 2008 the Sheriff along with the commander of the Emergency Responders made an official push and went public with a joint announcement on TV.

It is my hope that everyone will take the few minutes it takes to set up their phone. In addition to that there is a sticker that you can pick up at the substation, located at 1301 Homestead Rd. N. Lehigh Acres to put on the back of your phone to alert the responders that you have indeed entered the information. I would encourage putting the sticker on your phone. Stop by at your convenience.

I have always put the main numbers in my phone first. It goes alphabetically so I put, 'A1HOME#_____ ' 'A1MOM#_____' and so on in case emergency personnel find me unconscience, they will see A1 HOME as the first number on my phone and hubby's cell was A1HubbyCell 2nd, and 3rd A1MOM. The 'I' is further down (or up) on the phone and isn't 'right  there'. However I will add the ICE to mine and hubby's phone. I also have in plain view in our kitchen an index card with emergency contact numbers. (which reminds me it is time to update that!)

It sounds like you have a good system. USE the ICE system as well so that things will be consistent. The emergency responders are trained to look for the ICE entry. Having a backup system is a good thing.

Up-dating your information is a good idea. You should have a File of Life on your refrigerator door. This file has all of your medical information in it so emergency responders entering your home can have access to it. This information should be in the hands of those who you have listed as ICE contacts. Fill the file out in pencil so that when your information changes you can easily up date the file. The file contains the medicines you are currently using, any allergies you have and the names of your doctors (MAD).

I have had ICE in my phone for years, but I had never heard of the file of life. Sounds like a smart thing to do. =)

It is a very smart thing to do for ALL family members. I have found that when family members become sick or injuried, the other family members tend to forget important information.
