Wake up Lehigh Acres!!
Well it is time for everyone to rally. According to Commissioner Frank Mann, “since the majority of citizens voted against incorporation it shows the residents are reasonably satisfied with the county.” I sincerely hope that Commissioner Mann doesn’t truly believe that.

People expressed in the paper on April 2 that they would attend a town hall meeting to discuss these things. We have done this many times.

I suggest that we rally around a group to get things accomplished in Lehigh Acres. Take the time to help yourselves and neighbors by truly becoming active. If you sit back and wait for things to get better, they never will. Become active with a group that will allow you to express your feelings with the county. Go to meetings and have your voice heard.

Since many of you that voted “no” are happy with the way things are, one would assume the majority of people feel that way. I say that isn’t true.

One look around our community will show you the problems that we have. According to professionals, Lehigh Acres was considered a blighted community many years ago. Look at our roads, trash in ditches, no landscaping on Gunnery Rd., lack of code enforcement, the need for more law enforcement, lack of community parks, and the lack of commercial space.

The county says they increased the sheriff Office’s budget to help with crime in Lehigh Acres. It wasn’t done for Lehigh Acres; it was done because it had to happen. The influx of people that we have experienced over the last six years needed to be handled better.

The reason we have more deputies is because of the sheriff, not the commissioners.

The county says that they are spending more money than ever on roads in Lehigh Acres. The county should be spending more.

Currently Lehigh Acres gives the county nearly $2.8 million in gasoline taxes. According to Paul Wingard, they put in $1.3 million in road surfacing. This doesn’t include that Lehigh Acres has led the county in building permits for years now.

What about the impact fees? Where is all that money going? They neglected Lehigh Acres many years ago and now that we have grown they are finally doing a little bit from time to time.

The county says that it has increased code enforcement. Just because you add bodies doesn’t mean you are increasing enforcement.

Are they held accountable by the amount of fines or warnings that they write?

I ask your readers and the residents of this community: Are you happy with Lehigh Acres exactly the way it is? If so, then bless you.

Unfortunately you are in the minority.

That would mean you are never stuck in traffic, your car never has hit a pot hole, you don’t see trash on the sides of the roads, your neighbor’s yard is always mowed and clean. This sounds like Utopia. Isn’t that what we should always strive for?

Here are a few organizations that can help:

Lehigh Acres Community Planning Corporation (LACPC) — The mission of the Lehigh Acres Community Planning Corporation is to support the management, planning and redevelopment of Lehigh Acres to a degree needed to meet the needs of the community, and to prepare a community plan for Lehigh Acres and deliver it to the Lee County Board of County Commissioners.

Additionally, the corporation will engage in any other activity relating to the furtherance of the foregoing objectives.

Meetings are held the second Wednesday of every month.

Lehigh Acres Community Council — To mission of the Lehigh Acres Community Council is act as a liaison between the community known as Lehigh Acres and the Lee County Board of County Commissioners. Meetings are held the third Monday of every month.

Get involved!

Sincerely,
Bo Turbeville
