A registered sex offender arrested Thursday at the Lehigh Acres Community Pool is the first person cited for violating a new Lee County ordinance.
Known as the Child Safety Zone, the ordinance adopted March 24 says a sexual predator is not allowed in any public or private playgrounds and play facilities including a public swimming pool when they are being used by children.
Joseph Comfort, 56, of Lehigh was sunbathing with 20-30 children nearby when deputies arrived, according to the Lee County Sheriff's Office. Deputies confirmed Comfort had been made aware of the ordinance. He was taken to the Lee County Jail.
