Lehigh Acres Crime. I can only giggle when I see on some of the other forums how the Cape Coral members trash Lehigh Acres for it's crime.

Who are they kidding. I keep an eye on the news reports, and maybe someone over there needs to step back and take a good hard look.

Cape Coral is riddled with crime, and I am talking violent crimes. Yes we have our occasionial convienient store robberies, and grow houses, but man Cape Coral Police are mighty busy.

Now look at how many cops they have on duty in Cape Coral compared to the number of deputies in Lehigh Acres. Our deputies are doing a GREAT job!

Oh, I say Lehigh Acres is much safer than Cape Coral.

As many of you know, this is why LAL was created. I was tired of people looking down on me because I lived in Lehigh Acres.

Yes I live in Lehigh Acres, and I AM PROUD OF IT!

ok, ok I get it!!! I have been doing crime statistic comparisons to see where to keep looking for a house and Lehigh is really not out of the ordinary from many cities, (yes we are only a town, but with a decent population) Ft myers has higher crime ratings than we do.  It's very interesting to look at the numbers.

I have a hard time buying that we are better off than other places in Lee County considering my neighbor 3 houses down had an attempted break in while they were still home (just happened within a week), and found out about this yesterday, coupled with my next door neighbor being robbed about two years ago. And I have to leave town for work at the end of the week with my wife and 3 yr old son by themselves with this new information. She's a little scared about being alone, and I can't blame her. Nowhere have I ever lived that I'm scared about a crime being committed against myself or family than I do here. We do have a home security system, and grateful for doing that, but it only helps a little in knowing that my family is safe.

Please consider giving a home to a big dog. Robbers in prison who have been interviewed tell us dogs are the best repellent because they make noise as well as they just might bite.

I am an older woman who has lived alone in a high crime area. My Black Lab/German Shepherd is a pussycat, but she knows how to look mean. I have had three Black Lab mixes during my life and they have all been great with small children. This one likes to lay by the babies until they go to sleep.

Dog is an interesting idea, but until I get a fence in the yard, it won't happen. I do appreciate the thought.

I have 2 big dogs and no fence they just know they are not allowed past the back of the house. But as soon as we buy this summer a fence is a must. My dogs have huge barks so whenever I'm out in front of the house I always say something about the dobermans barking.

My house had been broken into a couple of times. It seems they knew my schedule at the Fire Dept. because it was only broken into when I was at work. 5 years ago I got a dog. Since then I haven't had any problems.

Two dogs are better than one. It is very difficult to keep track of two or more dogs that are circling around you. Some other things you can do even if you don't own a dog:
Post beware of dog signs around your yard
Place two large food bowls outside the front door or on the back porch and fill one with water
Purchase or record dog barking sounds that can be played while you are away from home.
We usually have at least two dogs in our home and currently we have four. We have been very fortunate never to have been broken into here in Lehigh. I have noticed that people seem to fear black dogs more so that other dogs and that maybe something to consider when purchasing or adopting.

Oh don't forget to lay out the dog poop. Oh yeah, just fill the yard. If they still ignore it, at least they will go away stinky!

Hello Florida....

My parents are thinking of looking for a home in Lehigh Acres, but after reading the posts on this forum they are reconsidering. I have to admit, when I read the posts I get a feeling like there are 2 different Lehigh Acres! One is a nice peaceful neighborhood, the other is one you need to continually watch your back. Is it a case of different areas of Lehigh are safe, and others not?

If this is the case, is there a general rule of thumb like "the South West is safe"?

Any comments would be greatly welcomed. Thank You, Dan

Dan, show me a place in the U.S. that is totally crime free. Yes we have our crime like any other community. Is it dangerous here, NOPE! I live in N.E. Lehigh and feel perfectly safe.

Darnell,  Thanks for the reply.  Is there an area of LH that might be considered the lesser safe area?  I don't want to start a firestorm, so if someone wants to send me a PM instead of posting it here for all to see (and contradict), I would appreciate it.

Thanks, Dan

I have lived on the east side for 22 years and consider it very safe.Likie darnell said all citys big and small have there problems. In Lehigh do not by a home that is isolated, by one where you have neighbors around.Ibelieve there is more crime on the westside starting about sunshine to st. rt. 82.If I am wrong someone can correct me.

Willow Lakes is in Fort Myers. Shadyside ST is just south of Lee Blvd from Richmond Ave. Shadyside isn't a bad area. At least not as long as I have known. It's actually a decent area. There is a school down there as well.

Anyone questioning about the "Bad areas" or at least the more crime prone areas. Here's my take. The area between Gunnery Rd and Sunshine Blvd. It goes pretty much from 23rd St SW to Lee Blvd. And also a section east of Sunshine but north of 40th St SW , which goes to about 23rd St SW (Stops somewhere between Alabama and Sunshine, nbot sure as there is a canal that blocks it). I have seen dozens and dozens of crime logs in those noted areas. The area north of 40th St SW and east of Sunshine has many new houses built within the boom. Almost 80% of the houses in there are new. But it is a rather shady area if you ask me. I drove through there looking for an address once, wasn't very happy with what I saw. Sorry LAL , i'm not trying to scare off residents, i'm only showing the facts. There are tons of other areas in Lehigh that are good.

Dan and Bob, don't let this scare you away from Lehigh Acres. I have been here for 13 years and never had a problem with crime. It's a very nice town, and I would like it to stay that way. Every city has it's crime prone areas. A so called "Bad area". Lehigh just has a couple small ones. And believe me they are small compared to the actual size of this city.
-Disclaimer- My UN "THE-COPS" is just that,a name.I am in no way affiliated with LCSO or any other law enforcement agency, nor is it an attempt to pose as a police officer.Perhaps I hold this name because I have great respect for PO's and the hard work they do.Thank you for your understanding. -End Disclaimer- :)

Hi
My husband and I are thinking about buying a home in Lehigh. We have three girls and after reading all that has been written about the crime there, we're reconsidering. Some people have told us that the more remote areas are more dangerous but others have told us the opposite. We would appreciate someone clarify what the real situation.

Don't be agraid to move to Lehigh, the crime situation here is overplayed. Yes there are some problem areas but must all commuities have those. Use common sense about locking you doors, not leaving windows open and it helps when it loks like someone is home. Having dogs helps too!
Sometimes it is more important to know a persons' motives that what a person says.

My husband is retiring from the police dept and we have a contract on a beautiful home in Lehigh Acres. It is on w 13th. It didn't look like a bad area but now I don't know what to do? Everyone I told in Ft Myers where we were buying gave me a funny look like oh you shouldn't buy there? Then I was told there are good and bad areas of Lehigh, so is 13th w good or bad?
