Lee County commissioners agreed this morning to support a grant request to fund a crimefighting program for southwest Lehigh Acres.
The Weed and Seed grant from the Department of Justice could provide up to $1 million over five years to weed out crime and replace it with programs to prevent it. The grant would be used in an area roughly bounded by Lee Boulevard, Homestead Road and State Road 82.
“Sheriff (mike) Scott deserves a lot of credit for bringing this program to us,” said County Commissioner Frank Mann. His district includes Lehigh. “Already our crime statistics have gone down.”
Lehigh residents decided they’re going to do it on their own and scores of them have worked on preparing the application over the past year, Mann said.
