Increased "Quality of Life" is what all of us desire for our families and friends. How secure we feel in our home and neighborhood is directly related to the preception of our "Quality of Life". The goal of the Weed & Seed Program is remove criminal activities, the reasons those activities flourish and increase the residents feeling of security and quality of life.

The success of the Weed & Seed Program is largely dependent on the input and efforts of the residents in the community. Without the support and determination of the people there is no chance to reclaim our neighborhoods and improving the quality of life for our families and friends.

A major goal of this committee is to aid and support those interested in establishing "Neighborhood Watch Programs" in their neighborhoods. We'll be talking more about this process and visiting many neighborhoods in the Weed & Seed designated area.

If your interested in starting a Neighbrhood Watch Program in your area, let us know.

If your looking for information or have a question ask away!

I put this in the members only section first so sorry for the 2nd post.

Hello everyone,

I have been away a while due to college stress. Who would have thought going to college and trying to work a full time job would be so hard.

Anyways. I have a question. I know that LCSO is working on getting that grant for Lehigh and I happen to live in the target area. I'm actually near the Florida Panter watch group.

I would like to start a watch group on our side of the street, but I am not sure how to go about this.

Do I just ask the neighbors if they want to join one? Put fliers in mailboxes of houses I know people live in?

I really want to get this started. We have a alot of abandoned houses around here ( like most of lehigh ), But it is getting to the point where at least once a week something is taken. We have an abandoned ripped apart ex-drug house with no door. Another house that people are coming at night and stealing doors and fencing etc...

I love my house, but I don't know how much more I can take.

I know LCSO does what they can,but earlier this week my husband and another neighbor saw 2 kids messing around near 2 of the abandoned houses. they took off before the LEO came, but then came back. The woman and I follwed them while on the phone with LEO just to have the LEO detain and talk to them and let them go. ( Now after the fact I find out that if these were bad people. they now know what my car looks like)...

Sorry for the rambling on. Any help would be appreciated thanks guys

Silver

OK LeMedic, I guess we're playing musical posts. I copied this over from the "Members Section" LOL.

Hi Silverine77,

I have not seen you post for awhile. Welcome back! Unfortunately the story you tell is increasely common and there is help available.

I will not go into a long discussion here but I'll list some comments and things you should do to seek help.

1.) I suggest you contact Larry Gutridge at 477-1802. Larry is a community resource liasion with the LCSO and one of his main focuses is Neighborhood Watch Groups. I believe Larry will be unavailable tomorrow so you'll probably get his answering machine.

2.) This Saturday, January 24, the LeeMeadow Watch Group is holding a neighborhood clean up in their area. Aside from the clean up efforts they will have information on "How to set up a Neighborhood Watch Group" and other information. Actually, there will be people from several "watch groups" helping out. Captain Tomayo with LCSO(Head Man in Lehigh) and Bill Keeler with Lee County Code Enforcement (Supervisor for Lehigh Enforcement) will be in attendance to support and answer questions. Ask for Deborh Sebastian, George Szymanski or myself when you get there. WHERE? Corner of Martin and Meadow Rd. (to get there go west on 23rd St. to Martin turn south, Martin will deadend at Meadow. Another route is SR 82 headed west to Gregory, turn right, then left onto Meadow. Look for the tents.) WHEN? Starts at 8:00 AM until ? (sometime after 12 noon)

3.) There is a coordinated effort by a group of government and civic organizations working with some highly motivated people to deal with many of the conditions you describe. To learn more about this effort look at the WEED and SEED pages on this website.

Due to previous commitments and a friends' funeral service I will not be able to be there all day , I'll be there as time allows. Be sure to ask for Deborah, George or Mike Weber if you go. If this is not possible send me a "PM" and I'll help get you started.

Is most of the crime targeted to empty abandone homes?

What area is most being effected by this kind of activity, these home dont have alot to remove other then doors and maybe windows? and what is happening to these parts? craigslist, flee markets or personel ads?

I become concerned, not being a fulltime resident and the fact that the home im purchasing is missing the well pump, pressure tank and assorted valves the seller has to replace, at the tune of over $1200

Although this could have been done by the foreclosed residents, it is still a major concern!

And yes I think banding with your neighbors is a must in the security of our homes,BUT who can you trust? when you dont know who your neighbor is?

Ah finally new people down the block moved in that sees things like we do. Introduced themselves, I told them about the weed and seed and that we pick up around are area, the agree that should be done and I think will actually help us out and also they mentioned about a neighborhood watch. He said that he's the type of person that knows who and what cars should be in the area and has not problem asking somebody suspicious what they want. Maybe now I can get some more neighbor participation and help us out abit.

I am an enthusiastic proponent of the procedures outlined in the Weed & Seed program.  I lived in the highest crime area of the City of Indianapolis for the last four years.  It was extremely difficult to make the adjustment from rural/suburban living to the hopelessness of the inner city.  What I learned in those four years was that there are really great people quietly living fear-filled lives among the criminal and drug addicted element.

If any one saw the latest edition of Extreme Makeover -- the two hour finale featuring the Bernard McFarland family -- that's where I lived, too.  In recent years, many agencies have pooled resources to rebuild and revitalize that community -- to bring hope where there was no hope.  It is making a difference.

I was placed on a street where people had lived side-by-side for decades and had never spoken to each other.  They stayed in their houses when they weren't at work, or they got into their cars and left the area.  Consequently the many who were without transportation were deprived of the most basic needs -- such as a fully-stocked grocery store.

The Annie E. Casey Foundation introduced Study Circles.  Study Circles, www.everyday-democracy.org/en/index.aspx, provided an opportunity for neighbors to meet and learn that they were dealing with the same issues, concerns and fears.  The one-month Study Circle resulted in the development of a Block Club which has now united with surrounding blocks and is forming a Neighborhood Association.

As the bonding of the neighborhood continued, as the steps outlined by Weed & Seed were incorporated into the residents' routines, beautification of the neighborhood became a priority.  This year my block has been designated Model Block of the Year by the Southeast Neighborhood Development CDC.  Nearly $500,000 in volunteer hours from groups like Eli Lilly and University of Indianapolis plus grant money won over the last year are being used to build a community garden, a pocket park, a gateway, 100 new tree plantings, benches and decorative trashcans along the street, as well as a mural on the wall of the business at the end of the street.

Dshelor posted the newsletter on May 25 @ 3:10 on the Weed and Seed Steering Committee page. Didn't start a new thread, didn't include it in some other thread, just posted it in the "Weed and Seed" section of this website. (anybody want to guess if it was AM or PM? )

TIT for TAT you guys will argue over anything.

Robert why don't you post stuff like that on your website and leave LAL up to others to post.

It seems the various committee chairs are keeping things updated. Why didn't the public relations chair post the first newsletter and introduce herself?

The strength of the Neighborhood Watch program is that ALL of the neighbors are watching out for each other. So even if there is someone questionable in the neighborhood, that individual will know that there are some people watching him/her home and subsequently activities all of the time. Not the kind of activity the criminal element welcomes.

Contact Larry Gutridge at 477-1802, he works out of the Lehigh Acres substation so is available, and he also lives here in Lehigh Acres, so he has a vested interest in helping making Lehigh Acres a safer place to live. He can and will assist you in setting up a Neighborhood watch in your area.
